A donut in between meetings, a bag of chips to tide you over until dinner, go ahead and super size the combo meal, does this sound familiar? So many of us are living life in the fast lane and are not even paying attention to the fuel that we are giving our bodies.By the end of the day, we often can’t even remember what we had for breakfast. According to a study, published in The New England Journal of Medicine, people who wrote down what they ate, realized that they were actually consuming 1,050 more calories than they thought they were. Consuming an extra 1,050 calories, in addition to your basic needs, will lead to a 10.9 pound weight gain over a one year period! Though on the more positive side, the reverse is also true. By decreasing your caloric intake by 1,050 calories per day, you can lose 10.9 pounds in a year.
Making conscious decisions concerning your food intake is the first step to a healthier you. A quick and easy way to accomplish this is through food journaling. This simple technique takes less than five minutes a day and can change the way you look at food once and for all. When you begin to keep a food journal, you will become more aware of not only what you are eating, but also why you are eating. Use a notebook, PDA, or even your home computer to start your own food journal. I suggest that in addition to writing down what you eat, you include portion sizes, the time, what was going on, who you were with, where you were, and how you felt afterwards.
Food journaling is a very important part of achieving a healthier diet, but many people benefit from taking it one step further. An appointment with a Registered Dietitian is a great way to keep your eating habits along with keeping your health in check. With the latest research and software technology, dietitians are able to look at specific excerpts of your food journal and analyze not only how many calories you consume, but also how much protein, fat, carbohydrate, vitamins, and minerals you take in each day. Dietitians use this information to help you modify your existing diet, to make sure you are getting the proper balance of nutrients essential for your health, along with the foods you love! A comprehensive review of a food journal can also identify certain patterns in your eating that may be acting as roadblocks to your success. Whether your diet needs a complete makeover or just fine-tuning, food journaling can be the answer!
